So I was sorting through old files and found an old fan fiction I wrote when I completed my medicine cat run, so thought I’d post it here.
“And are you sure that’s right?”
Moonflight stifled a sigh. Olivetail had kitted the sunrise before and didn’t seem to think she was a capable medicine cat, despite being named a moon previously, and the queen had been doubting everything she said.
“Yes,” Moonflight responded as calm as she could manage. “It will keep your strength up. The borage helps you milk flow.” It wasn’t like this was her first litter! Gladly, she left the nursery, blinking at the harsh sun.
“Moonflight!”
She turned to see her mentor approaching. She dipped her head respectfully. “Is everything alright, Blackheart?”
“A fox attacked Thrushfeather’s patrol and I’m running low on herbs. Could you collect some for me?” He asked, ushering a beat-up Eaglepaw into the medicine den.
“Of course, Blackheart,” she headed off. “Rosepaw!” She called for her adopted daughter to follow.
“Is this useful?”
Moonflight stifled a laugh, nodding. “That’s goldenrod. Take a few sprigs.”
Rosepaw, excitable as always, had thrown herself into the role of medicine cat assistant, as she did with everything (including the small lake on her first trip round the territory, but that’s a story for another time). So far they’d found comfrey root and horsetail, so it was going well.
“Wait, wait, no!” A loud yowl sounded from the other side of the thicket. Her reflexes acting before she could think, Moonflight leapt forward, claws unsheathed, slashing forward.
She stopped, blinking a few times to clear her head. Seeing the blood, her heart missed a beat, as she looked at the body in front of her.
It’s... a rabbit?
Badgerfang crashed through the brambles, breathing heavily. Spotting the rabbit, she heaved a heavy sigh of relief.
“Sorry about that, Mo- oh. Right. Well, thanks. I’ll be going now.” She picked up the rabbit and darted back the way she came. Moonflight looked gloomily back at the path of crushed plants Badgerfang had rushed through.
Rosepaw glanced over.
“What happened between you two? You were best friends, weren’t you?”
“Here.”
Badgerpaw blinked in surprise. Moonpaw beamed back, two feathers between them.
“For me?”
“Of course, mousebrain!” Moonpaw butted the older apprentice with her head affectionately, still smiling. Badgerpaw smiled in return.
“Well, I did collect them with you, after all!” She laughed.
The two she-cats spent the whole day like that, climbing trees with Kestrelpaw and telling stories to the kits. Anything that could cheer cats up in such depressing times.
“Moon*cough*flight?”
She scrambled to her paws, breathing heavily. Kestreleye was stumbling into a nest, wheezing badly. While upset her friend was in pain, Moonflight was glad to have something to take her mind off of Badgerfang, blocking memories out with remedies. Nettleclaw also came in, sitting down nearby, scratches stretching down her side. Moonflight worked quickly, but carefully, and soon both cats were comfortable again.
“What happened?” Moonflight questioned, putting herbs away. Despite their injuries, both cats looked proud.
“Rogues.” Nettleclaw announced. “They tried to threaten us, but we chased them away!”
“They’ll think twice *cough* before attacking again!” Kestreleye purred. “Duskhearts probably gloating about it to everyone - don’t worry, he’s not hurt. It’s just like when we were apprentices. Together, we can fight away any danger!” He grinned, then realised what he had said.
The words sat in the air for a moment, before Nettlclaw replied, “We’ll fight off any danger, and you can patch us up so we can fight again!”
All three purred in agreement, as Badgerfang stuck her head in. “Would you two like some fresh-kill?” She asked abruptly.
The warriors nodded. Badgerfang turned to leave.
“Bring enough for Moonflight too!” Kestreleye yowled after her.
Another moment of silence. Moonflight sighed dejectedly.
“She’s been like this for moons. I just want it to be like old times again.” She dropped to the ground. The warriors looked on sympathetically. The two had been inseparable as apprentices. “Any ideas on how to fix things?”
A half-moon later, the fox returned, attacking another patrol. The day before, Applefang fell off the sky oak while hunting, badly injuring her leg and, as the elders tale goes, ‘bad things happen in threes’, Blackheart was helping WindClan as their medicine cat was ill.
Needless to say, Moonflight was swamped with work.
Rosepaw knew herbs from spending time with Moonflight as a kit, so her and Thrushfeather collected them for her, but she needed another cat who could look after them, just so she could have a break if anything.
With Badgerfang on her mind too, she was exhausted.
It was the day of the fox attack she had an idea of what to do.
Foxclaw was organising the patrol to fight the fox. Badgerfang was a member of this party, much to her dismay.
“So, all of you attack from behind when Waspwhisker signals to you, okay? Now, go!” He yowled.
“Hold on!” A voice called. Moonflight was watching from her den, the dainty she-cat looking ruffled. “Can I have Badgerfang please?”
Foxclaw looked bothered by that, but didn’t dare argue with a medicine cat. He flicked his tail to dismiss Badgerfang, leaping off of high rock and bounding out of camp, the patrol following. Badgerfang crept over to the medicine den, not wanting to irk the unusually dishevelled medicine cat.
Most cats were asleep, except for where Moonflight was applying a poultice to Ravenwing’s fur. Most cats were badly beaten, except for where Applefang couldn’t move her leg. The warrior flicked her tail to acknowledge Badgerfang presence, but said nothing. She nodded at Moonflight, who was now calming down Amberflame, who had the worst injuries. She peered up at Badgerfang and waved her over. Despite not being on such good terms, Badgerfang wanted to help the usually composed, calm cat.
“What can I do?” She whispered. Moonflight’s amber eye looked panicked, but it soon died away.
“Keep an eye on everyone. Wake me up if anything happens.” The she-cat collapsed into her nest and was asleep in moments. Badgerfang sat next to her, following the cats orders.
As the next patrol returned, a few scratches but victorious, Badgerfang worked with Moonflight to help treat the cats. Although she found being a warrior hard, this was just as difficult. She found respect for what the two medicine cats had to deal with on a regular basis.
Badgerfang found herself forgiving Moonflight- what for, she didn’t know, but the cat only wanted to be kind and help cats. She was no different from the warrior apprentice she’d known all those moons ago.
“And are you sure that’s right?”
Moonflight stifled a sigh. Olivetail had kitted the sunrise before and didn’t seem to think she was a capable medicine cat, despite being named a moon previously, and the queen had been doubting everything she said.
