I recently found out that you can actually reach level 20 on normal mode. After actually succeeding, I decided to make a guide on how to do it. I got 55 extra exp so you may not have to do everything exactly the way I did it, but this is what I recommend.
Day 0:
You don't have to do anything special. Just make sure your name isn't something that may affect relationships with some characters.
Day 1:
Talk to Blackheart in the medicine cat den so that he gives you the coltsfoot quest when you leave camp with Thrushfeather. At some point during the tour, pick up coltsfoot, but make sure not to steal it from ShadowClan territory. Tell Nettlepaw that you'll do as she says when she asks you not to fight Kestrelpaw. When dealing with the elders, get Mosstail a different piece of prey just so you can listen to a story if needed (Don't actually ask for a story on this day). Turn in Blackheart's quest for 25 exp then ask if he can teach you about herbs. You can also start Badgerpaw's heroic quest by saying good things about Kittypet life.
Day 2:
You can find Nightkit right behind the tree in front of the apprentices den for 5 exp. Choose Badgerpaw to spar with. It doesn't matter if you win or lose since you can still train with Nettlepaw later that day. Choosing Duskpaw is fine, but only if you win (Good luck with that, I've only done it with stances). When the kits go missing, make sure to save both of them, and don't run away from the rogues. (Remember that Nightkit is wherever you said was the coolest place on day 1). In the medicine den, Blackheart will ask if you could help him apply herbs, which gets you 15 exp. He only asks you if you trained with him on day 1, which is why you needed to do that then. After you're done with that, train with Nettlepaw to learn stances. You could choose to train with someone else here, but then you would have to train with her on day 4, 5, and 6 to get to the third session with her.
Day 3:
If Badgerpaw asks if twolegs will take her in, say that they would. When hunting, catch both pieces of prey for exp. If you fail, just load your save and try again. When you meet with the apprentices, say you don't believe in Duskpaw's prophecy, and then send Badgerpaw when the fox attacks. You can also pick up coltsfoot to heal Kestrelpaw. During the fight, make sure that Duskpaw dies and gets his first heroic skill. When that happens, you can sand attack and hamstring the fox so that it doesn't hit you and then continue the fight until the fox escapes. If you have any trouble with this or any other fight, it may help to take up a healer role. You should be able to learn First Aid lick since you technically trained with Blackheart twice (helping him on day 2 counts as a training session). After the fight, you can either train with him or listen to an elder's story. For some reason he didn't want to train with me, so I listened to a story instead. Blackheart's later training sessions do give you more exp, so it's best to train with him when possible.
Editing note: If you ask Blackheart how he knew about Duskpaw's prophecy, it will increase your relationship with him, and may let you train with him. This also gives you the opportunity to ask if you can be his apprentice. Being approved by StarClan on day 5 will give you 20 extra luck. Doing well on the medicine cat test will also get you 60 exp, which could get you to level 21 if you did everything correctly. A guide on how to pass that test can be found here. You still should complete Badgerpaw's heroic quest for exp, so you won't actually become a medicine cat.
Day 4:
Talk to Ravenwing to pick up her quest. When choosing someone for the patrol, you can pick Kestrelpaw or Badgerpaw. I recommend picking Kestrelpaw because he tells you what to do. When you encounter the ShadowClan apprentices, sneak up on Mousepaw like Kestrelpaw recommended. (You can do this with Badgerpaw, but she doesn't give you the idea). Sneaking up on Mousepaw gets you 70 exp, and you can set up the meeting with Pebbleskip. Complete the patrol, and when you get back to camp and take care of Applefang, talk to Nightkit for another quest. Ask Mosstail about it, and he asks if you can tell them a story about Firestar in their place. If you don't know the story from the game, ask Duskpaw for help. If you tell the story correctly without having Duskpaw say all of it, you both will get 15 exp. Go to the ShadowClan border by the clearing to pass the message to Pebbleskip, and remember to talk to Ravenwing back in camp to complete the quest. Go to to the mossy clearing to see Nettleclaw's move and you can also train with her for a skill point and some exp.
Day 5:
Badgerpaw will ask you if you can ask Blackheart if she can be his apprentice. Say yes then go ask him about it. He'll say no, but it's important to do this for her heroic quest. Telling her about it later in the day will get you 10 extra exp. You can also go save Nutkit, but it's best to keep her in ThunderClan since doing the kitnapping quest won't give you exp. When training with Thrushfeather, choose the general training for 60 exp. When hunting, make sure you catch the rabbit and three mice. You can also give a mouse to Badgerpaw and a rabbit to Nettleclaw to boost you relationship with them. Deal with Moon and Star if you want to. Completing the patrol gets you exp regardless. Whever you want to, you can help Duskpaw fight the apprentices in cave hill for exp. After the moonpool segment, you can train with Nettleclaw for a third time. Choose general training for another 60 exp. This is the last session that gets you exp, so it's best to train with someone else from here on out. Go to the doves meeting if you want, but don't do the kitnapping quest since we want the war to actually happen.
Day 6:
Nothing special you need to do in the Voideyes dream sequence. Just don't resort to cannibalism. When Badgerpaw asks if you can help her tell a story to the kits, say yes. Before finishing your patrol, talk to Slackfur in the thicket. Talk to the bush, there is someone there, report them for 30 exp. (Note: You can keep it a secret for 30 exp as well, which will also raise ShadowClan's aggression. It's not required, but it might make it easier for the war to happen). After that, mark the WindClan border, and go back and tak to Foxclaw if you want to deal with Rabbitclaw. In camp, you can do Ravenwing's herb quest by talking to her and then asking Blackheart to give herbs to ShadowClan. If you don't convince him, tell Briarstar about it, then talk to Ravenwing to complete the quest. (You may notice that the war will not happen at this point, but don't worry, you can raise ShadowClan's aggression later). Tell the story to the kits, if you do well enough, you will get 50 exp. Here's what I chose to make them like my story:
- Name hero "Nighteagle" to make both kits like it more
- Wanted to take over
- He had skills of a clawmaster
- Shadow Claws
- Attacked the clans at the gathering
- She couldn't stand for evil
- Gathering Island
- She was willing to give everything to stop him
(I don't know if these are the best options, but they worked for me)
When choosing to do something will Kestrelpaw, choose playfighting for 15 exp. Almost everything else just gives you 10 exp and a stat boost. Go to the ShadowClan border by Hawktalon's hill to help Duskpaw fight Toadtail for more exp. Train with Blackheart if possible, and if you can't, then listen to an elder's story.
Day 7:
Choose to go on Badgerpaw's and Kestrelpaw's hunting patrol. Catch both mice and pick up the dead dove on cave hill and place it on the pile to give Slackfur a tummy ache later on. I'm not sure if the dead dove gets you more exp, but it's what I did. I got 20 exp for completing the patrol. Choose general training with Thushfeather for 60 exp, then help Badgerpaw look for the kits. Before doing that, you can go north of the ShadowClan border to fight Fisk and Roth. Fighting them gets you extra exp, as well as telling Foxclaw about them. Having Badgerpaw helps in the fight and it also gets her extra exp as well. Go to the abandoned twolegplace with Badgerpaw and follow the scent to where Maplefrost is. Train with Blackheart. At this point I got 40 exp from this lesson, but you might be at a different point. You can always listen to a story for the regular 20 exp if needed. (Note: If you are one lesson ahead from training with him on day 2, then you will get 20 exp. You can listen to a story instead for 20 exp and 5 bravery).
Before you go to the gathering, save your game. You need to go to the ShadowClan border to raise their aggression. Lose like a third of your health then go to the clearing and steal coltsfoot and heal yourself to full with it. Enter and exit camp to make sure you don't get exiled, and then go to the gathering to make sure that Oakstar declares war. Ignore the fact that you did an entire quest to give herbs to ShadowClan and are now stealing herbs for the war to happen. It's for the exp, I'm sorry.
Final Day:
Talk to NettleClaw behind the abandoned twolegplace and complete Badgerpaw's heroic quest. During the conversation on the ShadowClan border patrol, tell Nettleclaw to trust her Clanmates, and tell Duskpaw that in stories, heroes always die first. If you had beaten the fox, unlocked Duskpaw's first heroic skill, and said no to his prophecy, Duskpaw will get his second heroic skill here, and everyone will get 50 exp. During the war, I recommend sending Badgerpaw. Defeat Sootleg and the two ShadowClan patrols for maximum exp. This may be hard if you haven't done it before on normal, so here's some tips for Sootleg.
- On the very first turn, she will target Nettleclaw with crimson darkness. Have Nettleclaw switch to defensive stance and whirlwind strike, and have Duskpaw attack that turn. If you have first aid lick, use it on Netlteclaw.
- Make sure Nettleclaw stays alive and have Duskpaw tank with his heroic skill if needed. His second heroic skill can also help a lot.
- When she goes back into shadow formation, either whirlwind strike or guard to see which shadow does the most damage. Attack that shadow to get her out of it
- When Sootleg is out of Shadow formation, have Kestrelpaw stun her with cheap shot. Don't try any other status ailments.
ShadowClan patrol one:
- On the second turn, Redpelt will use The Rock of ShadowClan, which makes him immune. You can stun him to prevent him form using it.
- If needed, Nettleclaw can whirlwind strike to hit the ShadowClan apprentices.
ShadowClan patrol two:
- Shortfur is immune to status ailments.
- Robinfall has counterattack and will use it later in the battle. It is best to take care of them first for that reason.
If you did won every battle and did everything correctly, you should be at level 17. At the end of the game you will get 300 more exp, which will get you to level 20. Let me know if I missed anything or if there are any other opportunities for exp that I was unaware of.
